Massive earthequake kills six in Chile

A massive earthquake hit off the coast of northern Chile Tuesday evening causing the deaths of six people. The earthquake was measured on a dangerously high scale of 8.2 posing Tusnami warnings with waves as high as seven feet.  900,000 people and 11 hospitals were evacuated  the lower altitude region.

The quake struck about 8:46 p.m. local time, some 60 miles northwest of Iquique. It had a depth of 12.5 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

"The country has done a good job of confronting the emergency. I call on everyone to stay calm and follow the authorities' instructions," Bachelet tweeted after Tuesday night's temblor.
